ANNIE LOUEY

COMEDIAN, TV & RADIO PRESENTER

Annie Louey is an award-winning, multi-talented comedian and presenter who moves seamlessly between television, radio, and stage. With a strong background in stand-up comedy and journalism, she has mastered the art of being serious one minute and hilarious the next.

Annie recently spent time in Asia working as the host and writer of a new documentary for ABC International, titled Cross Border Comedy. The hour-long program delves into the emerging stand-up scenes in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Cambodia.

In 2024, she hosted an episode of Back Roads on ABC TV, exploring the untold history behind Beechworth, Victoria. She has also hosted two seasons of China Tonight on ABC TV, is a regular guest on ABC News Breakfast, and was the host of Rediscover Victoria, a travel program now available on SBS On Demand. Her quick wit and cheeky charm have made her a popular choice for guest spots on shows like The Cheap Seats (Channel 10), The Weekly (ABC TV), and various radio programs across the country.

Although she often shares personal stories on stage, audiences got to know Annie on a much deeper level when Australian Story (ABC TV) featured her in a 2023 episode – which has reached nearly two million views on YouTube. The documentary covers how Annie first got into comedy after surviving a campfire accident at 16 and developed a fearless attitude towards life.

During her recovery, she watched every stand-up DVD available at her local Blockbuster before deciding to enter the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Class Clowns competition. In 2011, she made it to the National Final, performing at Melbourne Town Hall. Much to the dismay of her Chinese parents, Annie was officially hooked on comedy.

That risk eventually paid off. As an adult, she has performed twice at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Opening Night Allstars Supershow at the Palais Theatre in front of over 3,000 people. She has also toured with the festival’s Roadshow and won the prestigious Moosehead Award in 2021 for her show Annie Louey is Flirting with Death.

The live show morphed into a 2024 YouTube sketch series, which Annie wrote and created, called I’m So Sorry for Your Loss, funded by ABC and Screen Australia’s Fresh Blood initiative for promising comedy creators. The program has previously helped launch the careers of comedians like Aunty Donna—whom Annie has also worked closely with on shows like Aunty Donna’s Coffee Café.

The sketch series complements another original web series she created, From the Hearse’s Mouth, which was selected for Sydney Web Festival. In the six-part series, she interviewed comedians like Dane Simpson and Claire Hooper about life and death—all while driving a vintage hearse.

Annie’s other writing credits include working on the final season of Rosehaven (ABC TV and Amazon Prime). In 2022, she was one of six writers invited to participate in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s First Stage program, which culminated in a professional reading of her original theatrical work.

As if she’s not busy enough, Annie also moonlights as a wedding celebrant—having married over 30 couples (and counting).
